Staying Safe in Florence

Florence, Italy is generally a safe place to travel – even if you are a woman alone. In most case scenarios, common sense is really your best tool in areas like Florence. However, if you don’t want to rely on your common sense, I’ve developed a list of helpful tricks and tools to have with you on your journey through Florence!

Risk: Pickpocketing and Petty Theft

Pickpocketing and petty theft are common in almost every city, and Florence is no exception. However, there are many things you can do to protect your valuables!

Tips and Tools:
  1. Use the hotel safe where possible and do not take too much money with you while you are walking around the city.
  2. Do not keep things in your back pocket or in a bag that it not directly in your eyesight.
  3. Use money belts or bags specifically designed to deter theft.

Risk: Scams

Like petty crime, scams exist in many areas where tourism is high. This is because people want to take advantage of people that are not familiar or wise to the foreign area that they are in.

In areas where a lot of tourists some to see, people may be waiting to conduct a scam, like “is this your gold ring?” or someone with “cashmere” coats offering you to buy.

Tips and Tools:

The key here is to minimize your contact with strangers, especially those trying to sell you or even “offer you advice or aid.”
